At the very fringe of what was once the Roman Empire, Corbridge is steeped in history. It was once a busy market town acting as a supply base for the Roman legions based here. The Corbridge Hoard on display in the museum is one of the most significant finds of the era and well worth a peek if you have time.
Fast forward several centuries and it’s still a paradise for shoppers with its streets of independent boutiques and cafés. When you’ve finished exploring, head to the Angel to refuel. The 16th-century coaching inn is a great gathering place for all day dining with bar, dog-friendly dining lounge, restaurant as well as a fish and chip shop! The food is hearty, seasonal, homemade and locally-sourced; the lunch menu is particularly good value and the Sunday roast with beef drippping roasties is not to be missed.
There’s plenty of outdoor seating at the front; a great place to watch the world go by. There’s a small car park at the rear and the town’s petrol station is, conveniently, next door.
