Traditional crow-stepped gable, quirky nooks and of course a sundial in the corner, this café is a beautiful glimpse into Scottish life 400 years ago. The building has been lovingly restored and today slate floors, painted panelling, roaring stoves and a cast-iron spiral staircase combine in this super-welcoming neighbourhood café.
Co-owner Sandra bakes brownies and makes soup, which are on the menu next to Molly and Jess’s scones, her Mum’s loaf cakes, and bacon rolls, toasted ciabattas and ice cream by Di Rollo of Musselburgh. Grab a table upstairs or a comfy window seat to savour a pastel de nata fresh from the oven, and a warming pot of tea.
Limekilns itself is worth a visit, a less-visited side of the Firth of Forth. Referenced in Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Kidnapped’, it dates back to the 14th century and has a peaceful fishing village vibe.
