“Where’s the Michelin star?” said one diner, and you do have to wonder. The kitchen team (now with a dedicated pastry chef) serve up a proper gastro medley with homemade desserts, ice creams, sorbets and petit fours. Enjoy pan-fried Cornish scallops, pea mint purée, crisp lardons and tomato oil followed by crisp belly pork, garlic mash, pak choi, orange and ginger jus.

David and Gillian are adept hosts, and have created a muted, contemporary interior with limestone tile flooring, bleached sideboard and mismatched tables and chairs. It’s a rural setting so the log fires are stoked up on cold days, and the garden outside has fantastic views over the Malvern Hills. One of the terraces has a glass veranda with a wood-burner, so you can continue soaking up the views even on chilly days.

Dishes are on the pricier side – around £15 to £20 for a main – but, given the quality, it’s excellent value for money.
