If you’re skirting Birmingham and looking to escape the traffic, this is the place.
Albert Beckett arrived here in Wythall in 1937, moving from Shropshire with a small herd of cows. Three generations have developed the land and business since, and Albert would no doubt be pleasantly surprised to see what his small herd has become.
Not only do the family grow wheat, oil seed rape, peas and protein beans, but the low, gabled farm building is now also host to a modern, agricultural complex: cookery school, bakery, farm shop, newly renovated restaurant and even a conference centre.
The aim is to reconnect people with food and farming and this is clearly reflected in the café menu, which is filled with products from local suppliers. Dine on vegetable hotpot, handmade scotch eggs and the excellent Ploughman’s Plank in the airy dining room, or grab a coffee and a bun from the bakery; don’t miss the award-winning breakfasts which are served all day, every day (apart from after 11.30am on Sundays).
