M40

It's well worth escaping the M40 for the pretty market town of Thame, at the foot of the Chilterns. It has a handsome and lively High Street with cosy pubs, stylish homeware shops and the fantastic coffee shop, What's Cooking.

The talented chefs choose only the finest, freshest local ingredients and it shines through in the flavours of their food. Breakfast and brunch are served all day and offer something for everyone, from homemade granola, buttermilk pancakes and bacon brioche rolls, to crushed avocado, perfectly poached eggs on portobello mushrooms or shakshuka. For lunch opt for a quick toasted panini or choose from a mouth-watering array of filo tarts and colourful salads.

You can simply enjoy a slice of freshly-baked cake with a flat white: the baristas here really know their craft and the coffee is very good, brewed using beans from a company up the road that shares their ethical ethos. The town's large (free) car park is nearby.
