A1

When the 1980s' milk quotas created a surplus for dairy farmers Martin and Thelma, did they grumble? No! Thelma spotted a gap in the market for luxury ice-cream and enrolled at college to learn how to make it. That's the kind of get up and go we applaud.

Today, Thaymar supplies farm shops and discerning eateries with over 35 delectable ice-cream and sorbet flavours. The elderflower and gooseberry blend and Gaelic coffee options are just rudely good; recipes are closely guarded with good reason.

The gabled tea-room gives onto lovely countryside, square benches and plenty of greenery for the kiddliwinks to run around on. Hot homemade meals include jackets, baguettes and breakfasts, with farm-reared Hampshire Down Lamb and Shorthorn Beef gracing the specials' board. The farm shop bursts with jams, chutneys, cakes and biscuits, specialist cheeses and farm-made frozen meals. If caught in a heatwave on the A1 or between Lincoln and Sheffield, come sit it out here.
