The Courtyard Tearoom

The Courtyard’s low-set building was originally built as a Navy, Army and Air Force Institute in the grounds of Womersley Park, when the stately home was turned over to support the war effort. Since then the building has been used as an apple store and craft centre before settling into its current guise.

Now it’s a brilliant tearoom, easily accessed from both the A1 and M62. Owner Jacci is proud of her Yorkshire roots, which filters through to the simple, tasty dishes and relaxed, tea room vibe. Her baking is first-rate – passed down by grandmothers on both sides – and if you can leave without sampling a slice of cake (we had the coffee and raspberry), you’ve got iron willpower.

A bookshelf at one end is used to sell preserves and books, the proceeds of which provide funds for village amenities, while free-range eggs and local honey are also available to buy.

The dinky car park is over the road, at the edge of a patch of woodland. Dogs are welcome inside but may be asked to sit away from the kitchen.
