Gilbies is frequently described as a hidden gem, tucked behind the main street in the leafy cathedral town of Hereford. The half-timbered house stands on a light-strung, sheltered courtyard in the shadow of the church spire.
Hereford’s fortunes grew from its rich agricultural land (famous for cider and cattle) and remains bountiful to this day, evidenced in the excellent produce in the market. The surfeit of good ingredients has brought with it a renaissance of the food scene, and Gilbies is one of the pioneers. Owners Rob and Hayley returned from Bristol to take the helm in 2016 and brought with them their experience of the urban foodie scene. The result is a relaxed, friendly hang out and a true taste of the region.
Fill up on classic dishes such as cod and chips, thick-cut pork chops, Herefordshire steak and filled jacket potatoes, or allow yourself to be seduced by the tapas menu: chorizo croquettes, Catalan broad beans and crispy pork belly.
Cake lovers won’t be disappointed – slices of maple-syrup glazed banana bread, toasted tea cakes and other treats are served alongside decent coffee.
