Dougie’s, The Cake Hole or however you know it, is a cracking place to break from the A1. “It caters for many regulars as well as passing trade,” said one customer, “including walkers, cyclists and ‘stray’ motorists.”
Be one of those motorists. Kirk set up the deli, café and bistro after a career as a chef with the RAF and makes almost everything in-house. You’ll have to time it right for the lunch window, but if you do you’ll be treated to seasonal dishes: pâté and redcurrant jelly on rye bread, stilton and walnut sandwiches or a slice of the much-loved carrot cake. Book ahead if you’d like to treat yourself to an afternoon tea. This is a community affair: jams and chutneys are frequently made with the glut from neighbours’ allotments, meat comes from the butcher down the road and bread is supplied by Hambleton in Rutland.
In the evening, it goes up a notch with a widely praised 8-course set menu showcasing Kirk’s skills. Arrive hungry.
