A1

Fodder is a paragon of the local food movement, a thriving food hub supporting a staggering 430 producers. It was set up when the Yorkshire farming community had been hard hit by the foot and mouth crisis and designed to provide a more sustainable, long-term plan. It’s just on the outskirts of Harrogate and for a taste of Yorkshire, there’s no better place: pick a cut of meat from the butchery counter, browse the tweed in the gift shop or grab a pie from the deli counter.

The modern and sustainable building – stone walls, large windows and a wooden pergola – also houses a café turning all those ingredients into hearty, affordable meals. Breakfast might be creamy porridge or a Great Yorkshire breakfast, lunch a chargrilled chicken Caesar salad or chickpea and courgette burger. For those in a hurry, takeaways are available from a gleaming Airstream outside – Fodder on the Hoof – with peaceful views of the wonderfully named Crimple Valley.

And you can shop with a clear conscience as all profits are ploughed back (pardon the pun) into the farming charity, and any spare food is donated to a nearby homeless charity.
