A1

With lawn games to borrow in the porch, flourishing gardens and a barrow selling veg and cut flowers from the garden at the gate, Kiplin Hall really is a special place to stop. We knew this already, and their People's Choice win at the recent 'Flavours of Herriot County' awards is the well-deserved cherry on their cake.

The Hall dates back to the 1620s and was built for George Calvert who founded Maryland, USA. The house and gardens are ticketed and it's well worth a tour. For more fleeting visits, the dark-panelled and impressively atmospheric tea room is open to all, decorated with grand portraits and heavy drapes. The walled garden supplies fillings for sandwiches, chutneys, jams and soups and the ice cream is squished full of home-grown fruit. There’s an excellent gift selection: prepare to leave with souvenirs.

Stretch your legs on the footpaths or circular one-mile lakeside walk and swing by in springtime for blankets of snowdrops.
