Lawn games to borrow in the porch, flourishing gardens and a barrow selling veg and cut flowers from the garden at the gate, Kiplin Hall is a really special place to stop.

It dates back to 1620, built for George Calvert who went on to found Maryland, USA, and it’s well worth a tour if you’re a history buff (you’ll need to pay for entrance to the house and gardens). Even if it’s just a flying visit, the tea room is open to all and a spectacularly atmospheric space. Step through the main doors to find the darkly panelled room decorated with grand portraits and heavy drapes. Ice cream is made using home-grown fruit, and the walled garden supplies ingredients for the sandwiches, chutneys, jams and soups. There’s also an excellent selection of gifts along the dresser at the entrance so be prepared to leave with souvenirs.

If you want to stretch your legs there are plenty of footpaths through woodland and open parkland (sometime with grazing sheep) as well as a circular one-mile lakeside walk. Come in the early Spring for spectacular snowdrops.
