With lawn games to borrow, flourishing gardens, and a barrow selling home-grown veg and cut flowers by the gate, Kiplin Hall remains a special place to stop. We knew this already, and their People's Choice win at the 'Flavours of Herriot Country' awards was the well-deserved cherry on their cake.
The Hall dates back to the 1620s and was built for George Calvert, founder of Maryland, USA. The house and gardens are ticketed and well worth exploring, now beginning in the beautifully interpreted Welcome Hall, which introduces the four families who have shaped Kiplin over the past 400 years. The former tea room has moved to a spacious new Visitor Centre by the car park, with a light-filled café serving hearty breakfasts, excellent coffee, much-loved scones, and seasonal lunches, alongside a shop full of thoughtfully chosen gifts. There are footpaths to explore and a circular one-mile lakeside walk, while spring brings drifts of snowdrops beneath the trees.
