Scotch Corner is a milestone in many journeys, so if you’ve got there and need a break, take it at The Coach House. It’s part of Middleton Lodge, a grand Georgian estate at the fringe of the Yorkshire Dales, and current owners Becky and James have turned it into a luxuriously modern get-away, with food to match.

The Coach House is the more informal of the two restaurants, and occupies the former stables. Make your way from the car park, laid out among a copse of pine trees, to find the restaurant in the elegant lavender-scented courtyard. Despite lofty ceilings, there’s a cosiness to the dining room’s slate floors and buttoned banquettes. Much of the produce comes from the estate’s kitchen garden, and the menu is otherwise dedicated to showcasing Yorkshire’s bountiful harvest, cooked to order. You could have eggs Benedict for breakfast, fish pie for lunch or seared beef and popped capers for dinner. You are, of course, just as welcome to drop in for coffee and cake.

And if you’re weary or fancy treating yourself in the cocktail bar alongside, book in to one of the sumptuous rooms for the night.
