Relaxed and informal, there’s a real friendliness to the Berwick Inn, from the duck eggs for sale on the bar to the super-friendly and adaptable staff. The menu calls upon the very best of Sussex ingredients for pub classics (North Sea scampi, steak and ale pie, burger and chips), as well as more culinary alternatives (seared scallops in pancetta, smoked duck breast and pomegranate salad, slow-braised pork belly with bubble and squeak). Breakfast is served from 10am and every bit as good as the afternoon fare.
The garden is a real selling point on hot days, lively with birds and butterflies beyond the vine-entwined pergola on the terrace.
Doors open for coffee and snacks from 7am, out of service to the commuters using the train station next door, so you can find a comfy chair and recharge at pretty much any time of the day.
