The Granary's busy window is a visual vortex that draws you in with its fresh-baked scones, pastries and hand-finished cakes - all straight from their own bakery. Further temptation lies beyond in the form of fresh sarnies, savoury pies, sausage rolls and salads of the day.

Out the back, settle in at a table or the breakfast bar to brunch on scrambled eggs with garlic mushrooms and chorizo, or homemade pancakes with maple syrup and crispy, home-smoked bacon. Afternoons are for Ultimate Cheese Toasties or sourdough bruschettas - perfect with an artisan coffee (with beans from the B Corp-certified Glen Lyon roastery).

This family-run café has been such a success for its owners, the much awarded David Stein Butchers, that they've opened a take-away version in nearby Bathgate. There's free parking a short walk away; detour back via the ruins of Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. Summer visitors might catch the annual jousting tournament.
