If you prefer commercial and cavernous places, 1958 mightn't be for you. This small, red-brick coffee shop, a mile off M1 J27, is for people who prefer the personal touch. Owner Andrea named the shop after her mum's birth year and what a lovely tribute. This ever-busy café is a winning choice if you seek a delicious toastie, focaccia or bowl of warming, homemade soup; locals come here for their daily dose of caffeine and chat.
Behind the modern façade are spaces inside and out in which to grab a break from the wheel. Family members help serve up lovely local treats: bakes from Luke Evans Bakery, tea and coffee from Lee & Fletcher. The stilton quiche, goats' cheese tart and salad boxes to go (think grilled halloumi, beetroot and walnut, pesto potatoes) are all fab, as are the Under Dough bakes and cookies.
1958 is a great stop-off near Felley Priory, known for its gorgeous rose garden and autumnal hydrangeas.
