From the moment you swoop past the elegant landscaped entrance you’ll be revived by Burford’s 15 acres of plants and gardens. Horticulturists will find the show gardens entrancing, but if you’re not so green fingered there’s plenty to divert you in ‘Le Souk’ – once the glasshouses now a large shop filled with covetable furniture, gifts and books. Founder Nigel and his team have dubbed it a ‘magical emporium’, and we agree.
The cafe is at the heart of it: a contemporary, light-flooded space that’s abuzz with happy customers. If you’d like a moment of peace there’s a quiet zone outside in one of the greenhouses where you’re welcome to take your coffee. Food here is well regarded – supplied by seven chefs and a full-time baker behind-the-scenes, it often uses ingredients grown on site as well as lamb from the local Burford flock. Anything the Company doesn’t grow is sourced from suppliers elsewhere in the Cotswolds. Wonderful.
