North Berwick has been undergoing something of a renaissance as people look beyond the expensive rents of Edinburgh for places to live and work: Steampunk was one of the pioneers.
There’s an airy, industrial feel to the steel-framed building, a former joinery warehouse, thanks to on-trend polished concrete, exposed girders, scuffed floorboards and vintage leather chairs. But despite the high ceilings, there’s a cosiness here with heaps of books and wood burners.
A vintage Probat roaster roosts in the corner, and supplies beans for the café here as well as others across Scotland; don’t forget to buy some to take home. Food is as good as the coffee: imaginative cakes, a different homemade soup every day, sriracha cheese toasties, bagels and other tasty options.
There are charging points if you need to crack open your laptop or top-up your phone, and tables outside if you need a gulp of fresh air.
