Like all the best farm shops, Rumwell started life as a small stall selling potatoes and free-range eggs at the farm gate. How times have changed, although it is still family-run.
Today the expansive shop has a well-stocked food hall, butchery, bakery and deli where you can pick up practically anything you want, much of it produced in Somerset. The farm’s sausages (which you can sometimes see being made) use meat from home-reared pigs, while the Jam Kitchen is busy year round making jams, chutneys, fudge and Christmas puddings. If you’re not sure where to start, just ask one of
the smartly dressed staff for recommendations, and if you’re conscious about single-use plastics you’re welcome to bring your own containers. Try the semi-skimmed and whole milk from the milk vending machine for the ultimate in creamy coffees.
Visitors to the café can enjoy magnificent views of the countryside from its panoramic windows, as well as tasty homemade breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas. And you can eat outside if weather permits.
There’s an impressive playground alongside, with a climbing frame, sand pit and ride-on tractors that should keep little ones entertained.
