Darts Farm has become a well-known food hub, but the farm is always at the heart of the business. Links to the soil are still strong, and the family’s herd of Ruby Red Devon cattle graze on the banks of the nearby river Clyst. The shop makes the most of its location on the Exe estuary, and you can reconnect with nature by visiting the animals, wending your way through the vegetable fields (where staff hand-pick produce for the shop daily) on the farm walk, or wildlife spotting in the hideout overlooking the wetlands.
Inside, every corner of the large shop is filled with goodies, all reared, caught or made locally. The food hall is stacked with various colourful veggies, deli goods and store cupboard essentials from across the West country, and the butchers have a great reputation. Pick up a ready-prepared beef Wellington for a gourmet meal on arrival at your destination.
Follow your nose and the waft of freshly ground coffee will lead you to the range of eateries, with tables inside and out making the most of views. Ingredients for the main restaurant come from the food hall and are conjured into delicious meals, perhaps pan-fried sea bass, or charcuterie platters, and the Farm Table takes produce from the farm and cooks it over the flame. For food in a hurry, the Fish Shed does great fish and chips, and the shack a mean steak sandwich. The Cow and Cacao Café serves light dishes, including baked eggs, chocolatey treats and sweet waffles.
