Darts Farm has become a well-known food hub, but the farm is always at the heart of the business. Links to the soil are still strong, and the family’s herd of Ruby Red Devon cattle graze on the banks of the nearby river Clyst. The shop makes the most of its location on the Exe estuary, and you can reconnect with nature by visiting the animals, wending your way through the vegetable fields on the farm walk, or wildlife spotting in the hideout overlooking the wetlands.
Inside, every corner of the large shop is filled with goodies, all reared, caught or made locally. The food hall is stacked with various colourful veggies, deli goods and storecupboard essentials, and the butchers have a great reputation. Pick up a ready-prepared beef Wellington for a gourmet meal on arrival at your destination.
Follow your nose and the waft of freshly ground coffee will lead you to the restaurant, with tables inside and out making the most of views. Ingredients come from the food hall and are conjured into delicious meals, perhaps pan-fried sea bass, charcuterie platters or a traditional Devonshire cream team. For food in a hurry, the Fish Shed does great fish and chips.
