With food cooked over a wood-fired hearth, vegetables grown down the road at a horse-ploughed farm, and a stonkingly good menu reflecting the seasons, it’s easy to wax lyrical about Provenance Brix and Mortar.
Provenance put down roots in a formerly bland canteen in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside, having started life in an Airstream caravan and horsebox trailer. Bland no longer, owners Kate and Greg have transformed it into a beautifully light and airy space with a large run of bi-fold doors opening onto a courtyard garden, where some of the herbs and vegetables are grown.
The T-shaped space blends deli, restaurant and café spaces, with the open kitchen the centrepiece of the restaurant; a suspended wood burning stove draws the eye. Outside, there’s loads of parking, and a huge garden with picnic benches where kids can let off steam and sun can be soaked up.
Stop at the deli on your way out to pick up some of the local ingredients that may have gone into your dishes. If you have time or a plane-mad child, the Imperial War Museum Duxford is just over the roundabout.
