M11

With food cooked over a wood-fired hearth, vegetables grown down the road at a horse-ploughed farm and a stonkingly good seasonal menu, it’s easy to wax lyrical about Provenance Brix + Mortar.

Provenance put down roots in a canteen in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside, having started life in an Airstream caravan and horsebox trailer. These have now been transformed by Kate and Greg into a lovely light space whose bi-fold doors open onto a courtyard garden where herbs and vegetables grow.

The deli, restaurant and café blend seamlessly. The open kitchen is the centrepiece, and a suspended wood-burning stove draws the eye. Outside, there’s a huge garden with benches where kids can let off steam and sun can be soaked up.

With an ethos of ‘fast slow food’, dishes are prepared with care and served quickly; perhaps wood-fired butternut squash, chargrilled sardines or grilled courgettes with smoked mayo. Stop at the deli on your way out and, if time, visit the Imperial War Museum Duxford nearby.
