The close connection to wildlife is what attracted gardeners Emma and Stephen to start a plant centre here in this former fruit garden. As you enter the south-facing Victorian walled garden, keep your eyes peeled because the sun-warmed microclimate buzzes with wildlife. It’s a treat to sip a cup of tea in the Birdhouse Tearoom as the birds feed outside. On summer days, envelope yourself in the crackles and tweets of the open air; as the cold nears, retreat indoors to the wood-burner.

Food is measured in metres not miles at the café, with many ingredients for the soups, cakes, chutneys and lunches grown in the garden. More than once their scones have been crowned the best in the Borders. On certain days, the café becomes the Kailyaird Restaurant, with set menus for carnivores and herbivores (check ahead for dates). The centre now sells aquatic plants and vintage and salvaged items, from garden statues to benches. Have a browse and stock up on groceries before you go.
