A38

Carved into the hillside, this quaint farm shop and café will fill your lungs with Dartmoor air. The décor is reminiscent of a log cabin in the mountains, just as cosy but without the jetlag. Outdoor seating is plentiful, accompanied by the rural soundtrack of sheep gently bleating, and there’s a secure play area for little guests to run around.

Classics fill the lunch menu and always use locally sourced meats. The homemade ‘Barn Burger’ reliably pulls in locals and the roasted chilli salmon is a tasty alternative if you fancy something lighter. Cream teas are all homemade and the coffee will revive you. If you’re lucky enough to be passing on Sunday, the roasts are something of a local secret and non-drivers can even wash their spuds down with a glass of Prosecco. Stock up on fantastic local produce in the shop and, should you have the time, drive a little further to Haytor just up the road: the famous granite outcrop offers unrivalled views of South Devon.
