However arduous your journey the sound of wind rustling through the reeds in the lake at Torworth Grange will calm you down. Farm shop, café, campsite and fishing spot, this family business occupies an idyllic corner of Nottinghamshire and stocks almost everything you could want for your onward journey. Artisan bread, regional cheeses, homemade meat pies, craft beers and ciders – even fresh cuts of ostrich and wild boar.
The decked terrace, looking over the lake, is festooned with lights and flowers for making the most of warmer evenings. Inside is bright and comfortable and quirkily decorated – the front of an old Tata bus, for example, makes a wonderful dresser. Tea is served in vintage cups that Val ‘Mother Goose’ has collected from charity shops and food is inspired by her own recipe book.
Try the homemade fishcakes, scotch egg platter served with crunchy pickles and coleslaw or a hunk of chocolate and raspberry cake.
