Vegetarians and vegans, hold your horses here. Jan Wise, way ahead of the curve, has been impressing everyone with her creative plant-based dishes for a decade. The whole of Suffolk wailed in dismay when her debut restaurant, The Veggie Red Lion, closed. Thankfully it was only to make way for a bigger and better brother – The Walnut Tree at Thwaite, where you’ll receive a warm welcome from manager Gaynor.
The pub has been lovingly refurbished without losing the traditional vibe, but it’s the food that really sings. Jan and chefs Aston and Chris know their flavours inside out and aren’t afraid to experiment with dishes from around the world. Try the Wellington with mushrooms and Suffolk blue cheese, and the renowned vegan peanut butter and Oreo torte, or see what they’re cooking up on the specials board. Have the full plant experience by having lunch in the secluded garden where some of the vegetables are grown. If you’re travelling between Norwich and Ipswich, you don’t want to miss it.
