The Pump is a captivating tea room alongside the mighty Bolsover Castle. Renovated brick by brick in 2016, it's in an 18th-century cottage on the town square and takes its name from the water pump just outside. Inside, staff are welcoming and their smiles are real. A mural brings a bolt of sunshine to one wall, colourful chairs cluster around tables. Many forgotten features have been brought back to life, from Victorian tiling and oak beams to a once-hidden original stone fireplace.

Breakfasts and lunches (sandwiches, salads, soups and hot meals homemade with love) are delicious and good value. Book a popular Sunday roast in advance or try a build-your-own afternoon tea. If you can resist the siren call of towering cakes beneath glass cloches, you’re stronger than we are.

Pop into the castle if you have time. Far from a defensive stronghold, the 17th-century edifice was built as an indulgent gentlemen’s retreat and was the birthplace of dancing horses.
