M20

The wood-panelled Potting Shed drips with foliage and is a failsafe pit-stop on your way to or from Dover. Spacious and down-to-earth, there's room for the whole family. Its handful of quirky, underground bedrooms will be bookable soon, should you fancy an overnighter in Middle Earth.

Walk past the decadent leg of Spanish jamón in the bar to find the capacious, vaulted dining room. Felt clouds hang from the lofty ceiling above a pleasing mismatch of bright chairs; chefs in their open kitchen prepare tasty dishes of the day. It’s a notch up from pub grub with tapas, Lebanese platters and wood-fired pizzas alongside roasts and burgers.

The sunny terrace has awnings for shade; deck chairs dot the large lawn. History buffs should admire the magnificent (if confusingly-named) Leeds Castle nearby. A Norman stronghold, it looks exactly as a castle should – moated and crenelated – and was used by Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.
