If you’re looking for a quick pit stop on your way to or from Dover, The Potting Shed is it. Spacious and down-to-earth it has plenty of room for the whole family. Walk through the bar and past the decadent leg of Spanish jamon to find the breezy dining room. Felt clouds hang from the lofty vaulted ceiling, above a mismatch of brightly coloured chairs.
Watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen as they prepare the flavourful menu. It’s a notch up from pub grub, offering tapas, Lebanese platters and wood-fired pizzas alongside Sunday roasts and burgers.
The sunny terrace is shaded by awnings on sunny days, and deck chairs are set out on the large lawn. History buffs should not depart before heading to the magnificent, if confusingly-named, Leeds Castle. The Norman stronghold is exactly as a castle should look – moated and crenelated – and was used by Henry VIII and his wife Catherine of Aragon.
