M50

Swathed in Virginia creeper, you’ll find the Malthouse tucked away near the church in the heart of handsome Ledbury. Its paved courtyard brims with flowers and is perfect for a chilled lemonade on a hot day. Inside is beamed and cosy while the courtyard remains covered, heated and peppered with blankets on cooler days if you’d prefer a breath of fresh air.

Customers are struck by the friendliness of the self-effacing owners. Food is reliably tasty and all made on site from scratch: the Tex Mex shakshuka and seeded bagels are hard to resist for breakfast; smoked haddock chowder or Turkish eggs are perfect for lunch. The coffee is excellent and the dresser is crowded with scones, cakes and bakes under various glass domes to tempt even the most steadfast dieter. We loved the rhubarb and strawberry bostock and pear and hazelnut cake. Even those on a gluten- or dairy-free diet have a choice of treats to indulge in here.

The gallery upstairs displays local art, or stroll through Ledbury to see its famous ‘black-framed’ Tudor buildings.
