A lot has changed since Charlotte and Anita took over the Council’s former canteen in Haddington, a genteel town near East Lothian's Garleton Hills. With an eye for thrifty design they've hidden the stainless steel counters behind pallet cladding topped with piles of food, and the furniture is second-hand and upcycled. With a wave of their wand, they've transformed this into a fresh, light-drenched space. The stone building's sheltered courtyard is a fantastic place to unwind on sunny days and its planters brim with seasonal flowers and bulbs.
The emphasis is on good, home-cooked food with a strict local sourcing policy down to the coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Breakfast on shakshuka or pancakes with bacon and maple syrup or a Full Loft, or lunch on mackerel pâté, pearled spelt salad, legendary sausage rolls or a top-notch toastie. The homemade ice cream and lime and courgette slices are dreamy. Cross the town's 12th-century Nungate Bridge for a riverside stroll or catch the Farmers' Market on the last Saturday of the month.
