A lot has changed since Charlotte and Anita took over Haddington Council’s former canteen. With an eye for thrifty design they kept the functional stainless steel serving counters and disguised them with piles of food and pallet wood cladding; furniture is second-hand and upcycled. And, with a wave of their wand, they transformed it into a fresh, light-drenched space. A sheltered courtyard in front of the L-shaped, stone building is a fantastic place to pause and unwind on sunny days.
The emphasis here is on good, home-cooked food and there’s a strict local sourcing policy for ingredients. Breakfast on shakshuka or pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, lunch on mackerel pâté on homemade oatcakes, pearled spelt salad or the legendary sausage rolls; and indulge in the home-made ice-cream and brilliant cakes – the lime and courgette and bakewell slice are particularly recommended. Coffee is freshly ground and you should try the turmeric latte if you haven’t had one before – a cup of golden sunshine.
