M1

Just off the M1, this attractive pub was runner up in the Observer Food Monthly's 'Best Places to Drink in the UK 2022'. Thankfully for us, it's a pretty great place to eat, too. Founder Sam Hagger kickstarted his Beautiful Pubs Collective with this handsome village pub. It's now a community hub with eclectic décor that pairs exposed stone walls with tartan carpets, chunky painted beams with leather Chesterfields.

Genuinely happy staff ferry food to busy tables, dietary requests don't raise an eyebrow and portions are generous. The menu is wide ranging – try the ‘hot hob’ filled sandwiches, grilled cuts of local beef or a real McCoy Sunday roast (with Yorkies and goose-fat roasties; Sunday papers and Bloody Marys are optional). Craft beer and real ale are served in traditional dimpled glassware – 'bring back jugs' is a mantra in this Good Beer Guide spot – and the coffee is barista-quality. Dogs are welcome in the garden where summer evenings inspire wood-fired pizza nights.
