Nestled on Frodsham’s pretty high street the Devonshire Bakery is a welcome break from the M56. Follow your nose to find its vast array of artisan breads (sourdough, rye, ciabatta, spelt, baguette) made on site from recipes honed over five generations.
Pull up a chair at a window table to enjoy a smooth coffee and made-to-order sandwich as you watch the world go by. There’s a cosiness to the interior which is hung with bold artwork and in summer tables are set on the pavement. The beef and pork pies are famously good and it’s worth picking up a spiced chutney sausage roll or golden-crusted pie for later – our favourite was steak and blue cheese. Don’t miss the handmade chocolates at Christmas and Easter too.
There’s a pay-and-display car park just round the corner. Make time to browse the Lady Heyes Craft and Antiques centre nearby before you go; the old farm buildings are now host to a run of alluring vintage shops.
