M56

If you crave the homely aroma of fresh-baked bread, follow your nose off the M56 and into the Devonshire Bakery on Frodsham's pretty high street. Exercise self-restraint as you decide which artisan breads and baguettes to plump for. Sourdough, wholemeal, and spelt and honey are all contenders, with recipes honed over five generations. The beef and pork pies are famously good - our personal pick is the steak and stilton. Pick up a spiced chutney sausage roll or golden-crusted pie for later, or a gift-box of handmade chocolates if passing at Christmas or Easter.

There’s a cosiness to the art-adorned interior and pavement tables beckon in the summer sun. Tuck into your freshly prepared sandwich du jour with abandon and sip on a locally-roasted Jaunty Goat Coffee, as the outside world goes by. The nearby car park is free so, before heading off, browse the local craft and antiques centre whose old farm buildings now house a run of alluring vintage shops.
