The spacious Smiddy Farm Shop stands on the site of the old village blacksmith’s, now transformed into a tantalising local food hub stocking produce from all over Scotland. Browse the shelves for Harris Tweed or artisan ceramics and fill your basket with treats from the deli counter and butchery. The meat is all reared down the road and the game is from the surrounding countryside. Don’t leave without picking up one of the Smiddy’s steak pies and perhaps some of their home-cured bacon.
In the airy beamed café chefs whip those same ingredients up into delicious dishes (including an outstanding bacon roll). It’s busy but staff are smiley and efficient. Grab a pew at the breakfast bar or pull up one of the zingy orange chairs to tuck into panini stuffed with Stornoway black pudding, mature Cheddar and tomato relish, or some homemade banoffee pie or a finger-licking peanut butter slice with a flat white. Don’t miss the loos before you head on your way – visitors always remark on the spectacular view.
