An emporium of enticing food and wine, Scarlet Wines makes a fantastic pit stop when Cornwall’s crowds get too much. Sitting above the Hayle Estuary (a haven for bird life and good for a stroll), this low stone barn is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, drawn to the restaurant and amazing deli. You can find delicacies from Cornwall, Italy and Spain: smoked fish from Tregida Smokehouse, apple preserve from the Cornish Bee Farm, Tuscan olive oil, Spanish almond turrón.
The cosy, stove-warmed restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Diners sit at sheepskin-covered benches inside or sunny tables outside and are plied with mouth-watering dishes – cinnamon toast or baked eggs with feta and chorizo for breakfast, warm beetroot salad or fresh seafood for lunch, baked cod with lentils and mezze platters for dinner. There are plenty of options for vegans and the coffee is excellent. Limited parking is available outside and dogs are welcome. Don’t leave without browsing the wine shop for an arrival tipple.
