You’ll find Saddleback at the edge of the North Wessex Downs, housed in a converted piggery. Farmers Clare and David are enthusiasts of the field-to-fork philosophy and supply the farm shop with as much locally sourced produce as possible.
The café is snug and welcoming and the menu, like the shop, proudly local. Bunting hangs over scrubbed wooden tables and pew benches and from the sunny patio terrace you can enjoy the Berkshire hills rising to a copse on the brow, or watch the combine harvester at work in the fields. Kids can bowl about on the large lawn, visit the chickens and tire themselves out in the play house.
The countryside around is ripe for exploring so if you’ve got time before heading on, ask staff for a map and explore the nearby footpaths. If you call ahead, the kitchen will prepare you a picnic.
