The Lowlands are often overlooked but take some time to drop in to Kinross on your way through Scotland. Centred on a large loch, the sleepy town is ringed with low-lying hills and is a world leader in cashmere production.
On an islet in the loch is the enchanting Lochleven Castle where Mary, Queen of Scots was once held prisoner. Take the ferry out to the castle before meandering over to No. 98, where owners Jim and Jane will indulge you in their love of mouth-watering burgers and Fairtrade coffee. It’s far from a two-trick pony, though: there are also excellent brunches (with meat from the butcher down the road) and a good line in vegetarian and vegan dishes.
Kids will love the pink panther milkshake and crunchie rocky road, while sandwiches such as the pulled brisket with slaw and mustard sauce will keep anyone filled up till the Highlands. Service is attentive and the vibe relaxed. A great place to rest road-weary bodies.
