M42

Known as North Warwickshire's hidden gem, the glorious Middleton Hall (a Grade-II listed building) was saved from ruin by a team of volunteers who spent decades restoring this moated, timber-framed building. Visitors to the 42-acre estate can now explore its 950-year history, marvel at the formal gardens (including an early example of a heated walled garden) and stroll around the adjoining RSPB Middleton Lakes Nature Reserve. You might spot kingfishers and herons if strolling along the three miles of winding, wetland paths.

In the Tudor courtyard is a small shopping village where the Courtyard Coffee Shop awaits you with a friendly welcome and tasty food, year-round. The panini are especially good and the smooth coffee goes well with a slice of an inventive cake; kids will love the unicorn hot chocolate. There is a small parking charge and the Hall and Gardens are ticketed but you are, happily, free to explore the Courtyard.
