At the heart of a rural community this characterful pub is just a stone’s throw from the A35. Tolpuddle is a picturesque village steeped in history. The namesakes of this charming inn – the Tolpuddle Martyrs – were arrested in 1833 for swearing an oath to a ‘secret workers’ society’, which many consider to be the early sketches of a trade union.
Inside it’s modern and inviting with comfy chairs, long bars and dining areas surrounding brickwork chimney breasts. There’s chatter from locals and friendly staff to greet you. For food, it’s pub classics all the way, with a pinch of local influence. The Dorset mushroom risotto, steak and ale pie or Dorset lamb hot-pot won’t disappoint. If you need to wear off your meal, take a stroll through the village where references to the martyrs’ history can be found in every direction. If you don’t fancy that and the weather prevails, there’s plenty of seating out the front of the pub, where you can observe the comings and goings of the thatched village.
