You’re not imagining things if you hear the squawk of a parrot as you walk into Laggan Coffee Bothy and Gallery: Kara the African grey is a popular resident and loves to entertain visitors to the café, gallery and gift shop. You’ll get also a warm welcome from owners Stuart and Gordon who stock a beautiful range of Scottish gifts. Bread and croissants are baked fresh daily, while the excellent coffee will set you up for any onward drive. Better still, settle by the wood burner and enjoy lunch as you admire the fantastic local photographs taken by Stuart, while Kara entertains you with her vocabulary.
The handsome, gabled shop (featured in the hit TV series ‘Monarch of the Glen’) stands on a bend in the road where Laggan Bridge crosses the River Spey. Visitors are often on their way to Fort William or Aviemore but there’s plenty to divert you here at the edge of the Cairngorms, particularly the Corrieyairack Pass, which leads across the Monadhliath Mountains.
