M54

The heady, scented gardens set the Hundred House apart, encircling this eclectic Shropshire restaurant (with rooms) with a secret garden, running streams and around 70 varieties of herb, fruit and vegetable. A 'top 20 cool places for food and gardens' (The Times), you’ll be revived the moment you escape the M54 and alight here.

The building’s name reveals its rich history, 'hundred house' being the term for an ancient administrative centre and court of law. This is an unusual warren of buildings, from 14th-century to Georgian, red brick to thatched. They are quirkily decorated (including a swing hanging from an oak beam) and show their age in parts. In the cosy farmhouse kitchen restaurant – hexagonal floor tiles, dried herbs hanging from the rafters – flavour is king. Chef Stuart prioritises home-grown produce and herbs, plucked liberally from the garden.

Factor in a longer stop to enjoy your meal before exploring the famed Ironbridge Gorge nearby.
