A9

Clare named her tearooms after her daughter but was inspired by her mum, Eunice, to honour the family talent for baking and a blether (chat, for the non-natives). Behind the enticing turquoise and pink front, the dog-friendly café and tearoom rings with the bustle of a lovely busy team and their happy chatter, especially from twinkly eyed, good-humoured Clare. Hettie’s Loose Leaf Teas – all 32 flavours – are blended in-house and have become so popular they’re now shipped all over the world. Newer on the scene is the coffee, roasted exclusively for Hettie's.

You can lunch on sandwiches (served with pink coleslaw), panini, homemade sausage rolls (like none you've seen before) and flat-bread pizzas...but it’s the cake that people really come for. Try the signature carrot cake or a strawberry tart and be warned that if you opt for Hettie's famous afternoon tea, you’ll need to take a riverside walk (where you can also find free parking) before settling back into the car.
