M74

You'll find this prettily named place on the high street in Uddingston, a small town near Glasgow that's home to the impressive, 13th-century Bothwell Castle. Peek through the bay window of this rose-coloured café into the bright and inviting space within, where pictures of Hazel’s finest cakes adorn the walls.

Those of you who struggle to ice a cupcake will be wowed by these multi-layered, structurally impressive creations. Try a slice of maple and pecan or white chocolate and cranberry, or plump for a lemon curd cupcake. Coffee and cake are served alongside tasty breakfasts (with sausages from Donald's, the butcher across the street), home-cooked lunches, soups, toasted sandwiches and baked potatoes.

If you're wondering what scents the air so sweetly even outside the bakery, you'll soon spot the answer: it's the Tunnock's factory, churning out teacakes by the thousand. For us, Hazel's handcrafted cakes definitely have the edge.
