The enthusiasm this Flintshire farm shop has for sustainable local produce is catching. Provenance is key: kindly reared meat is sourced from the estate and neighbouring farms, milk is produced over the road and fruit and veg are grown just outside the shop. Local game is stocked in the freezer, and sausages and pies are made on site with meat raised at Hawarden. The Christmas turkeys are particularly sought after – lovingly tended, they have music piped into their barn to keep them calm.
Fill your shopping basket with all manner of countryside treats, from artisan bath oils to indy beer and cast-iron camping pans. Then step through to the airy café to taste the difference that good provenance makes to flavours. Try a black pudding and pork burger for a late breakfast or a farmland platter of local meats and cheeses for lunch. Outside, a huge play fort and a mile-long nature trail will keep kids entertained, and there’s PYO fruit in summer and a weekend marketplace twice a month.
