We had to prise ourselves away from the café and farm shop at Fenton Barns, with their multitude of iconic Scottish foods and flavours packed into one unlikely location: a former RAF squadron building. Owner Mhairi manages her trove of Scottish produce and tasteful gifts very thoughtfully. The food hall has cookbooks, kitchenware, Scottish cheeses, oatcakes, local seasonal veggies, heather honey, chocolates and quail eggs. The smoked fish is noteworthy, hooked out of the North Sea and smoked just down the road.
A wood-burning stove warms the cosy café, whose dressers are piled high with cakes, tarts and homemade custard creams. Savouries include cheesy chive scones, deli sandwiches, house-recipe stovies (made with meat and potatoes) and fresh soups – the sweet potato, spinach and chickpea warms from the inside out. For a leg-stretch after, survey the coast's golf links, beaches and bays from 'The Law', a prominent local hill where ponies graze. If nearby Haddington is on your route, pop into Carlyle House, Mhairi's arty café.
