Originally built to serve the RAF airfield that stood here in the war, the former squadron buildings at Fenton are now a fantastic pint-sized shopping village. At the centre is the farm shop, where owner Mhairi thoughtfully manages her trove of Scottish produce and tasteful gifts – cookbooks, kitchenware, cheese, eggs, oatcakes, chocolates and seasonal fruit and veg.

The café at the far end has been remodelled to include an open fire. Food matches the cosy vibe and is home made or locally sourced where possible: quiches, over-filled sandwiches, house-recipe stovies (a Scottish speciality made with meat and potatoes and served with chutney) as well as delicious cakes piled on the dresser. The smoked fish is particularly noteworthy, hooked from the North Sea and smoked down the road. Pick up a cup of freshly made soup to go – the sweet potato, spinach and chickpea is delicious – or try the homemade custard creams or the cheese and chive scones for a tasty snack on the run. We had to prise ourselves away.
