Cholderton is a handy halfway between the South West and The Big Smoke. It's a fully organic farm of some 2,500 acres, with cockerels in attendance and muddy tractors frequently sighted near the flint and red-brick farm shop. There's a homely welcome in the café, known for its A-grade bacon sarnies. The fridges are full of Pieminister pies, local cheeses and deli treats and the shelves are laden with edible essentials: free-range eggs and meat, bread, vegetables and chutneys.
Barista-standard coffee is served with a smile as are plates of crisply-jacketed potatoes, huge ploughman's lunches and homemade quiches. Pull up a simple table inside or, to bask in that farmyard feeling and enjoy the fresh Wiltshire air, alight at a chunky wooden picnic table in the covered barn or beneath a parasol on a sunny day. Here, modern farming is in tune with nature and the owners passionately preserve homes for both plants and wildlife. You can find Cholderton on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the covered bar area outside and on the patio.
